Zoology Exhibit to Open at Henry Vilas Zoo - A Journey Through Time: North American Mammals Prehistory to Present"
MADISON (May 15, 2013) — On Saturday, May 25th, Henry Vilas Zoo will open the doors to a new exhibit—“A Journey Through Time”—where zoo guests will discover a fossil journey following North American mammals from prehistory to present.
The exhibit will be open daily 9:30-4:45 from May 25th through September 2nd at the Zoo Visitor Center. Explore the similarities and differences between prehistoric and modern horses, bison, and big cats, among others, this summer. You may never think about North American mammals the same way!
Ever wonder about the similarities between a mammoth and an elephant? Have you ever thought our tiger resembles a saber-toothed cat? You're not far off. Made possible by collaboration between Your Zoo, Friends of the Zoo, the University of Wisconsin Zoology Museum, and sponsors that include Pepsi, Safari Ltd., and Vollrath. The exhibit will compare Pleistocene mammals to their modern counterparts with graphics, real fossils, bones and realistic casts. You will even be able to inspect the full skeletons of a saber-toothed cat and a bear that stands over 12 feet tall.
About the Friends of Henry Vilas Zoo - The Friends of the Zoo’s purpose is to build community support and provide funding for Henry Vilas Zoo improvements. This includes the acquisition, conservation, and replacement of animals; refurbishing and creating new exhibits; supporting educational programs; and improving the overall educational and recreational value of the zoo.
