Second Annual Madison Aruna 5K ?Run for Their Freedom?
Name:
Second Annual Madison Aruna 5K ?Run for Their Freedom?
Date:
October 10, 2015
Time:
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM CDT
Event Description:
The Madison Aruna 5Kwill raise awareness of sex trafficking and funds to support the freedom of exploited women in Southeast Asia. Each participant will run for a woman by name and all money raised will directly benefit the Aruna Project's efforts to bring freedom to the enslaved. Last year, the inaugural Madison run raised more than $15,000. As one result of that race and others like it across the country, twelve women have been freed from a life of sex slavery in the past year and are now working at Somerset Exports, a freedom business started by the Aruna Project to employ survivors.
The first 400 registered participants will receive a drawstring backpack made by the hands of these women. The base entry fee for this year's race is $15, which also includes post-race food and giveaways via raffle drawings and prizes for top runners and fundraisers. T-shirts also made by sex trafficking survivors will be offered for an additional $10 donation.
WHAT: Second Annual Madison Aruna 5K Run for Their Freedom
WHO: Fundraiser Run for Non-profit Aruna Project
WHERE: Vilas Park Shelter, 1602 Vilas Park Drive, Madison
WHEN: Race at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, October 10 (Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m.)
"Commercial sexual exploitation is a complex global crisis affecting virtually every nation. In a city in India where the Aruna Project works, there is an area roughly the size of Madison's Isthmus where 15,000 women are held captive in the sexual slave trade, exploited several times per day for the mere cost of a cup of coffee," said Alex Pence, one of the organizers of the run. "Everyone can do something to help bring freedom to the enslaved. Whether you've collected gold medals, trained as a weekend warrior, or are simply willing to take a long walk, we invite you to join us in Running for Their Freedom."
The Aruna Project's work includes daily visitations with sex workers, with efforts to rehabilitate women and children through counseling, adult literacy classes, skill and trade development, and strategic partnerships on the ground, with the end goal of helping them to sustain lifelong freedom through gainful employment surrounded by holistic care.
