Event Description:
Join us for a special free screening of “Rwanda & Juliet” and for a Q&A afterwards. Dartmouth Professor Emeritus Andrew Garrod travels to Rwanda to mount a production of “Romeo and Juliet” featuring members of both the Hutu and Tutsi tribes a mere two decades after the genocide. The journey towards opening night is fraught with financial and interpersonal tensions, setbacks and against-the-odds triumphs. This layered, nuanced documentary gets to the heart of the matter by giving us a clear-eyed example of why Shakespeare is as relevant and important today as ever before. This special screening is presented by the Wisconsin Film Festival (UW–Madison Arts Institute and Department of Communication Arts), UW-Madison Libraries, the Chazen Museum of Art, Wisconsin Public Radio and other partners. It is part of the Shakespeare in Wisconsin 2016 initiative and will be shown in three communities in the state.
