Promega Fall Art Showcase Opening Reception & Symposium

  • Share:
Name: Promega Fall Art Showcase Opening Reception & Symposium
Date: October 4, 2016
Time: 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM CDT
Event Description:
The Promega Fall Art Showcase presents ‘Wis-Con-Sin,’ featuring three generations of Wisconsin photographers: a self-taught artist, a contemporary collaborative team, and a small-town studio photographer, each who created life-long photographic projects based in Wisconsin. The exhibit, curated by Portrait Society Gallery, includes about 90 images that show compelling intersections among these three unique bodies of work. Exhibiting artists are: Eugene Von Bruenchenhein (1910 - 1983) born in Marinette, Wisconsin, but spent much of his adult life in a small house in Milwaukee. He created art there for 40 years, amounting to several thousand works in various media. After Eugene died, the work was brought to the attention of Milwaukee Art Museum director Russell Bowman. Now internationally famous, the work of EVB (as he is known) has been exhibited in many museums and was included in the 2013 Venice Biennale. Charles Van Schaick (1852-1946) worked in Black River Falls for more than 60 years as the town photographer in an era before cameras were available to the masses. He opened his photographic studio in 1879. About 60 percent of his approximately 5,700 extant glass plate negatives are studio portraits. The other 40 percent include street scenes, major events in the region, outdoor family and group photos, buildings, picnics, people, and livestock. J. Shimon & J. Lindemann have collaborated as artists since 1983, choosing to focus on rural Wisconsin towns not far from where they both grew up. As Wisconsin’s pre-eminent contemporary photographers, they use antiquarian cameras and printing techniques to record post-industrial settings, rural landscapes, small towns, and shifting modes of life. The rich interchange of their work between place and people sits alongside Von Bruenchenhein and Van Schaick’s works in an associative conversation about human relationships in particular times in history. A symposium will be held with photographer J. Shimon and Portrait Society Gallery Director, Debra Brehmer on Tuesday, October 4, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. The Fall Art Showcase opening reception will follow from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Promega BioPharmaceutical Technology Center, 5445 E Cheryl Parkway in Madison, Wisconsin. The Fall Art Showcase runs from Tuesday, October 4, 2016 through January 2, 2017. The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
