  • Share:
Name: How the Health Care System Fails LGBT Elders
Date: April 29, 2016
Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM CDT
Event Description:
While health care workers do their best to be empathetic and culturally competent, LGBT seniors have had poor experiences in the past. These experiences affect their trust in the health care system to treat them respectfully. The power point presentation entitled, "How the Health Care System Fails LGBT Elders" will help you understand the LGBT concerns and help you consider appropriate changes to better serve LGBT clients. Three LGBT panelists will share some personal stories. Our presenter is Caroline Werner is the LGBT Senior Advocate with the OutReach LGBT Community Center. Her half-time position is funded by grants from both the City of Madison and Dane County. Caroline is a 75-year old lesbian with a Masters degree in Social Work from UW-Madison. She was a case manager at both an urban and a rural Dane County senior coalition. She has experience working in group homes with mentally ill elders and people with developmental disabilities. In her current position, she brings LGBT cultural competency training to senior-serving agencies. She provides information and referral to LGBT seniors age 50+.
